Explosive Vegetation was first introduced in the Onslaught expansion in 2002, designed as a staple green sorcery to accelerate mana by searching for two basic land cards. By the time it was included in the 2015 Duel Decks: Elspeth vs. Kiora, it had become a hallmark of ramp-style strategies, valued for its ability to provide significant board development in the mid-game. The card features evocative artwork depicting the violent eruption of flora from the earth, a visual theme consistent with its function of rapidly growing a player's mana base.

The artwork for this specific printing in the Duel Decks series was illustrated by Aleksi Briclot. Briclot is a renowned fantasy illustrator known for his dynamic compositions and contributions to the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. For this version, he sought to capture the raw, chaotic energy of nature reclaiming space, aligning with the elemental themes central to the Kiora side of the deck. Upon its release, the Duel Decks: Elspeth vs. Kiora set was well-received by players for providing thematic, pre-constructed gameplay that highlighted the rivalry between the two iconic planeswalkers.
