Extirpate

Extirpate was introduced in the 2007 Magic: The Gathering set Planar Chaos, a release centered on the theme of alternate realities where colors of magic functioned differently than in established lore. As a black spell capable of removing cards from a graveyard and library, it served as a powerful tool for strategic disruption, reflecting the set's experimental design philosophy that explored what the game's mechanics might look like if the color pie had evolved along a different timeline.

The card’s illustration was created by Aleksi Briclot, a prolific fantasy artist whose work defines much of the game’s modern aesthetic. Briclot utilized a dark, visceral style to convey the spell's thematic effect of 'extirpating'—or pulling out by the roots—a threat from an opponent's deck. Upon its release, the card was widely received as a significant competitive staple due to its unique split-second mechanic, which prevented opponents from responding to the spell as it was cast.
