Where it came from
Eye for an Eye was originally introduced in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, representing one of the earliest iterations of the game's reactive spell mechanics. As part of the White color alignment, the card was designed to punish opponents by mirroring damage dealt to the caster, reflecting the high-stakes, interactive play style that defined the game's initial release during the rise of the collectible card game genre.
The artwork for the Fourth Edition printing retains the illustrative style established in the early sets, characterized by the stark, thematic fantasy aesthetic common to the 1990s era of Wizards of the Coast. Fourth Edition served as a major foundational reprint set, intended to streamline the game's base offerings and standardize card borders for a growing player base, cementing Eye for an Eye as a recurring, if niche, tactical tool in White-aligned decks.
