Where it came from
Ezuri, Claw of Progress was released in 2015 as part of the Commander 2015 product line, specifically featured within the 'Plunder the Graves' preconstructed deck. The card depicts a transformed version of Ezuri, an elven leader from the Mirrodin plane, who has been corrupted by the metallic oil of the Phyrexians. This oversized version was produced as a promotional foil card, intended to be used as a visual aid or a display piece for players commanding their decks in the Magic: The Gathering Commander format.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who captured the character's terrifying new aesthetic through a blend of organic and synthetic details. Voss utilized a vibrant, sharp style to emphasize the grotesque evolution of the character, a design choice meant to ground the card in the dark, body-horror-centric lore of New Phyrexia. Upon its release, the card design was well received by the community for its strategic mechanics and its striking, visceral artwork that effectively communicated the narrative shift of the protagonist.
