Faerie Vandal

Faerie Vandal was introduced to the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem in the Throne of Eldraine expansion, later appearing as a featured reprint in the Jumpstart 2022 set. The card was conceptualized within the whimsically dark aesthetic of the Eldraine plane, a world heavily influenced by classic European folklore and fairy tales, reimagined through the lens of modern high fantasy. As a creature type, the Faerie is a staple of blue color identity, typically characterized by evasive flight and disruptive utility, and this specific iteration was designed to reward players for drawing extra cards, a core mechanic associated with the game's intellectual and controlling archetypes.

The card’s visual design is the work of artist Lie Setiawan, who utilized a vivid, saturated color palette to capture the chaotic and mischievous energy of a Faerie causing disruption in a formal setting. The illustration leans into the contrast between the delicate, ethereal nature of the creature and its kleptomaniac, opportunistic behavior. Upon its release, it was well-received by players in various competitive formats, particularly in Limited play and Commander, where its ability to grow in power through standard card-draw mechanics made it a reliable, low-cost threat that scales effectively as the game progresses.
