Where it came from
Failed Inspection was released in 2016 as part of the Kaladesh expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set in a steampunk-inspired world defined by rapid technological innovation and aether-powered invention, the card captures the bureaucratic friction inherent in the city-state of Ghirapur, where the Consulate regulates the creation of new devices.
The card features artwork by Jonas De Ro, who emphasizes the contrast between a majestic, intricate invention and the abrupt, red-stamped denial of its permit. Designed as a counterspell, its mechanics reflect the theme of stifling progress through rigid administrative authority, a core narrative tension within the Kaladesh block.
