Provenance

Where it came from

False Prophet was released in 1999 as part of the Urza's Destiny expansion, the final set in the Urza block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was printed as a rare creature card, designed to function as a powerful board-wiping effect that incentivized players to carefully manage their combat phases. The card reflects the high-fantasy, artificer-focused themes of the set, which explored the fallout of Urza’s experiments and the overarching conflict of the game's narrative at the time.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Christopher Moeller, who employed his signature style to capture the dramatic and ominous nature of the figure. The design intent was to provide a psychological deterrent on the battlefield, forcing opponents to decide whether to destroy the creature or risk the exile effect triggered upon its death. Upon release, it was well-received by players for its tactical utility and remains a notable example of the unique creature-based removal spells that defined the late 1990s era of the game.
