Where it came from
Fang of Shigeki was released in early 2022 as part of the Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set marked a significant return to the Kamigawa plane, reimagining its traditional Japanese folklore-inspired setting through a futuristic, cyberpunk-inflected aesthetic. The card reflects this thematic blend, depicting a nature-focused spirit entity adapted for the high-tech, neon-lit environment of the set.
The card's artwork was illustrated by Daarken, a veteran fantasy artist known for his dark and detailed style. In designing the piece, the artist aimed to capture the essence of a kami—a Shinto-inspired spirit—manifesting in the modern era. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional inclusion for limited play, valued by players for its contribution to the set’s mechanics centered on enchantment synergies and the green mana color identity.
