Provenance

Where it came from

Fangren Pathcutter was released in 2004 as part of the Fifth Dawn set, the final expansion in the Mirrodin block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set explored themes of metal and artifice, focusing on the inhabitants of the artificial plane of Mirrodin as they grappled with the scarcity of resources and the shifting landscape of their metallic world.

The artwork was provided by Rob Alexander, a long-time contributor to the game known for his lush landscape illustrations. In designing this card, the intent was to visually capture the rugged, primal nature of the Fangren, a group of trolls native to the Tangle forests of Mirrodin. The card features an ability that grants trample to all creatures the player controls, positioning it as a strategic mid-game tool meant to help smaller green-aligned creatures overcome defensive barriers.
