Fanning the Flames

Fanning the Flames was released in 1998 as part of the Stronghold expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the second set in the Rath Cycle, Stronghold focused on the plane of Rath and introduced mechanics that encouraged aggressive playstyles. The card was designed as a sorcery that allowed players to pay a buyback cost, enabling them to return the card to their hand to be cast repeatedly, a design choice intended to give red decks late-game utility.

The card features artwork by Margaret Organ-Kean, who contributed extensively to the game during the mid-to-late 1990s. Her illustration portrays a stylized elemental figure manipulating fire, consistent with the high-fantasy aesthetic established by Wizards of the Coast at the time. The card was received by players as a functional, albeit situational, tool for burn decks, frequently discussed for its efficiency in Limited formats where repeatable damage spells were highly valued.
