Where it came from
Fateful Absence was released as part of the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Innistrad: Midnight Hunt. The card was designed as a white removal spell, reflecting the set's thematic focus on gothic horror, transformation, and the struggle against darkness. As a promo variant, the 18p version was distributed through organized play channels, intended to reward players for participating in local game store events and to highlight the atmospheric aesthetic of the Innistrad plane.
The artwork for this particular iteration captures the intense, somber visual language established by Wizards of the Coast for the Innistrad setting. Illustrators tasked with the Midnight Hunt aesthetic aimed to evoke a sense of urgency and dread, utilizing stark lighting and high-contrast compositions to differentiate these promo cards from their standard-set counterparts. Upon its release, the card was widely noted by players for its utility in competitive formats, particularly for its ability to address a wide range of permanent types at the cost of providing the opponent with a card draw.
