Where it came from
Fateful Handoff is a rare enchantment card released in 2022 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion, The Brothers' War. The set serves as a narrative return to the iconic conflict between Urza and Mishra, exploring the artifact-heavy history of the plane of Dominaria. Within the game's mechanics, the card depicts the pivotal, often treacherous exchange of power and artifacts that defined the war's escalation.
The card features artwork by Wisnu Tan, who captured the high-stakes, magical nature of transferring volatile power. The design reflects the 'The Brothers' War' theme of artifact-based gameplay, requiring players to trade control of an item in exchange for card draw and life loss. It was received by the community as a flavor-rich inclusion that reinforces the set's central tension of desperate, mutually destructive trade-offs.
