Where it came from
Fencing Ace was originally released in the 2012 Magic: The Gathering set Avacyn Restored, representing the themes of the plane of Innistrad. The card was designed to highlight the double-strike combat mechanic, serving as a straightforward, aggressive creature for the white color identity. Its re-release in the 2018 Masters 25 set was intended to commemorate a quarter-century of the game by featuring iconic or mechanically representative cards from throughout its history.
The artwork for this specific printing retains the original illustration by Volkan Baga, who utilized a clean, dynamic style to emphasize the poise and precision of a fencer. The design objective was to convey the elegance of a trained soldier rather than a hulking warrior, fitting the gothic horror and high-fantasy aesthetic of the setting. Upon its inclusion in Masters 25, the card was received as a functional staple for limited play formats, prized for its ability to capitalize on combat-enhancing spells.
