Where it came from
Ferocious Zheng was released in 2018 as part of the Global Series: Jiang Yanggu & Mu Yanling, a unique product line designed specifically for the Chinese market. Wizards of the Coast developed this set to celebrate Chinese culture and mythology within the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem, marking the first time the game featured planeswalkers specifically created to represent Chinese lore. The card serves as a mechanical representation of the diverse creatures inhabiting the setting of the series.
The artwork for the card was created by artist Xinmei, who worked to synthesize traditional Chinese artistic aesthetics with the high-fantasy visual language typical of Magic: The Gathering cards. The design focuses on fluid movement and naturalistic textures, aiming to ground the creature in the mystical landscapes described in the set's narrative. Upon release, the set was noted by players and critics as a significant milestone in the game's commitment to localized content and regional design themes.
