Where it came from
Fighter Class was released in 2021 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Adventures in the Forgotten Realms, which marked the first time the game featured a crossover with the Dungeons & Dragons franchise. The card was designed as an Enchantment with a unique class-based mechanical structure, intended to mirror the progression of a character leveling up in a tabletop RPG. By investing mana across three distinct stages, players can tutor for equipment, reduce equip costs, and eventually grant double strike to their creatures, effectively simulating the martial development of a fighter.
The artwork for this particular promo version was crafted by the artist Joe Slucher, whose dynamic illustration captures a heavily armored warrior mid-combat. The design team focused on creating a top-down experience that felt authentic to Dungeons & Dragons while remaining balanced within the competitive framework of Magic. The card was widely praised by the community for its thematic resonance, as it successfully distilled the multifaceted utility of a combat-focused character class into a single, cohesive permanent.
