Where it came from
Figure of Fable was released as part of the Lorwyn Eclipsed Promos, a set of promotional cards associated with the Lorwyn expansion block for Magic: The Gathering. These cards were distributed through various organized play channels in the late 2000s, designed to highlight the game's shift toward tribal themes and ethereal, folklore-inspired aesthetics.
The card features artwork by Larry MacDougall, whose signature style evokes traditional storytelling and mythic fantasy. By depicting a shifting, whimsical figure within a woodland setting, MacDougall successfully leaned into the Lorwyn plane’s central concept: a world of eternal afternoon where light and shadow constantly interplay. Upon release, the promo was well-received by players for its alternate art, which provided a more cohesive, atmospheric take on the card compared to its original printing.
