Filigree Fracture

Filigree Fracture was released in February 2009 as part of the Conflux expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set on the plane of Esper, a world defined by its reliance on magical metal known as etherium, the card represents the central conflict of the block where the inhabitants of the shard seek to complete their physical forms with synthetic materials. The design team created this card to offer players a specific functional tool for destroying artifact-based threats, fitting seamlessly into the artifact-heavy environment that defined the Alara block narrative.

The card features artwork by Christopher Moeller, a long-time illustrator for the game known for his distinct, painterly style. Moeller was tasked with depicting the act of breaking through the intricate, metallic filigree that characterizes Esper architecture and lifeforms. His illustration captures the visceral moment of magical disruption, emphasizing the fragility of the plane's obsession with perfection. Upon its release, the card was received as a solid utility choice for competitive play, particularly in formats where artifacts played a dominant role in deck construction.
