Provenance

Where it came from

Aven Squire was released in 2009 as part of the Conflux expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set served as the second installment in the Alara block, a plane defined by its fractured shards that had recently merged back into a single reality. The card reflects the lore of the Bant shard, an idealistic, white-aligned society governed by rigid hierarchies and chivalric codes, where avian soldiers served as scouts and protectors.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Christopher Moeller, who depicted the squire in the distinct, high-fantasy aesthetic associated with the Bant region. Moeller focused on conveying the creature’s agility and knightly status, emphasizing its winged anatomy and martial attire. Upon release, the card was received as a standard common-rarity creature, valued primarily for its functional role in Limited play environments, where its low mana cost and defensive capabilities provided reliable early-game stability for players.
