Where it came from
Finale of Promise was originally released in the 2019 War of the Spark set, designed to represent a climactic moment in the overarching narrative of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. As a powerful sorcery spell, it reflects the intense magical escalation of the set, featuring artwork by Titus Lunter that captures the volatile, spell-slinging energy of the character Nicol Bolas's machinations. The design focuses on the mechanic of graveyard recursion, allowing players to cast instant and sorcery spells from their discard pile, a hallmark of high-impact blue and red gameplay.
The version from Outlaws of Thunder Junction Commander, numbered 166, acts as a functional reprint within the context of this western-themed expansion. While the core mechanical identity of the card remains unchanged from its War of the Spark debut, its inclusion in the Commander supplemental product allows it to reach players engaging with the expanded, multi-set card pool of the modern era. The card is generally regarded by the community as a staple for spellslinger-themed decks due to its efficiency in generating card advantage and tempo.
