Fire Sprites

Fire Sprites was released in 1994 as part of the Legends expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the third expansion set for the game, Legends introduced the concept of legendary creatures and multi-colored spells, significantly broadening the strategic landscape of the fledgling trading card game. The set was designed to capture a sense of high fantasy epicness, moving away from the more generic mythological themes of early sets toward a cohesive, character-driven lore.

The card features artwork by Susan Van Camp, whose contributions to the early years of Magic: The Gathering are noted for their distinct, painterly aesthetic. The illustration portrays the titular sprites with a sense of fluid movement, aiming to capture the ephemeral and volatile nature of elemental fire. While the card is often remembered for its niche mechanical utility in early play, it remains a classic representation of the experimental design philosophy that defined the Wizards of the Coast catalog during the mid-nineties.
