Where it came from
Fissure Wizard was released in 2020 as part of the Zendikar Rising expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a common-rarity creature to support the set's focus on the 'landfall' mechanic and blue-red archetype synergies. It reflects the rugged, hazardous environment of Zendikar, a plane defined by its sentient, shifting landscape and the magical instability caused by the recent presence of the Eldrazi.
The artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist in the Magic: The Gathering community known for her atmospheric and character-focused style. Her depiction of the wizard emphasizes the elemental chaos of the world, capturing the moment the character interacts with the volatile mana of a fissure. The card was received as a functional, utility-focused piece for limited play formats, prized by players for its ability to filter cards while maintaining a presence on the board.
