Provenance

Where it came from

Flamebreak was released in 2004 as part of the Darksteel expansion, the second set in the Mirrodin block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set explored the themes of a world constructed entirely of metal, introducing the indestructible keyword and cards that interacted heavily with artifacts. As a red sorcery, Flamebreak was designed to provide aggressive decks with a powerful board-wiping tool that bypassed protection from red, reflecting the harsh and unforgiving environment of the Mirrodin plane.

The card’s illustration was created by Trevor Hairsine, a comic book artist known for his dynamic and kinetic style. Hairsine aimed to capture the visceral, destructive impact of the spell, depicting a massive surge of molten metal erupting from the ground. Upon its release, the card was well-received by tournament players for its efficiency in dealing direct damage to both creatures and players simultaneously, making it a reliable staple in red-based sideboards during its time in the Standard format.
