Flametongue Yearling

Flametongue Yearling was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 set for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed specifically for the Modern format, intentionally bypassing Standard legality to introduce powerful, synergistic cards that reference the deep mechanical history of the game. The creature was designed as a direct mechanical nod to the iconic Flametongue Kavu, a staple of early 2000s competitive play, reimagining its classic enter-the-battlefield damage effect in a lower-cost, more aggressive package suitable for the modern pace of the game.

The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized a vibrant, high-contrast style to emphasize the creature's elemental fire motif. The design process focused on scaling the power level of the original 'Flametongue' concept down to a two-mana creature, creating a card that provides efficient board interaction. Upon its release, it was well-received by players for its tactical flexibility and its thematic connection to classic Magic cards, solidifying its place as a reliable utility creature in Red-based aggressive decks.
