What it does

Target player discards a card at random. Then that player discards another card at random unless they pay 1 generic mana.

The Keldons would never admit it, but Greel unsettles them, too.

Provenance

Where it came from

Flay was released in 1999 as part of the Prophecy expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the third set in the Urza block, it followed a period of intense power-level experimentation by Wizards of the Coast, intended to provide tools for players to combat the dominant archetypes of the time. The card was designed as a black sorcery meant to punish opponents for deploying creatures, fitting the set's mechanical focus on resource attrition and graveyard synergy.

The illustration was provided by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and iconic artists from the game's early era. Rush employed his characteristic style to depict a grim, visceral scene that echoed the dark aesthetic prevalent in late-90s fantasy art. While not considered a marquee card in competitive play, it remains a notable example of the era's thematic commitment to 'punisher' mechanics, reflecting the design philosophy of challenging player board states through direct removal and life loss.
