Where it came from
Fleeting Image was released in 2003 as part of the Eighth Edition core set for Magic: The Gathering. This set was a milestone for the game, marking the introduction of the modern card frame design that improved legibility and aesthetic consistency. The card itself originated in the earlier Urza's Destiny expansion, designed to serve as a recurring, evasive threat that rewarded players for managing their resources carefully.
The artwork for this particular printing was illustrated by Rebecca Guay, an artist widely recognized for her ethereal, painterly style that became a hallmark of the game during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Her interpretation of the creature emphasizes its shifting, translucent nature, fitting the card's mechanical identity as an elusive blue creature. The card has remained a nostalgic favorite among fans of the game's classic era of illustration.
