Provenance

Where it came from

Flesh Allergy was released in 2010 as part of the Scars of Mirrodin expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set marked a return to the metal-dominated plane of Mirrodin, where players witnessed the encroaching corruption of the Phyrexians, a race of biomechanical horrors. This black-aligned sorcery card was designed to reflect the set's themes of decay and infection, mechanically punishing players for the presence of artifacts or creatures hitting the graveyard.

The card features illustration by Igor Kieryluk, who was tasked with visualizing the gruesome intersection of organic flesh and metallic rot. His artwork captures the visceral aesthetic of the Phyrexians, using muted, sickly tones to emphasize the card's function as a form of removal. Upon its release, it was regarded as a functional, niche inclusion for limited formats, fitting well into the draft environments that prioritized the graveyard-centric mechanics of the era.
