Provenance

Where it came from

Flickerwisp was introduced in the 2008 Magic: The Gathering set Eventide, the second half of the Shadowmoor block. The card was designed to highlight the set's focus on hybrid mana costs and the recurring themes of flickering—or exiling and returning—permanents to the battlefield to reset their abilities. It reflects the set's darker, ethereal aesthetic, capturing the fleeting nature of the fae creatures native to the world of Shadowmoor.

The artwork was created by illustrator Warren Mahy, who captured the creature's ghostly, ephemeral quality through fluid lines and a soft, glowing color palette. In competitive play, the card became a staple of 'Death and Taxes' style decks, where its ability to trigger enter-the-battlefield effects and disrupt opponent strategies was highly regarded. It remains a recognizable example of utility-focused creature design from the mid-2000s era of the game.
