Where it came from
Fling was originally released in the Stronghold expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 1998, though this specific version is the reprint featured in the 2012 Dark Ascension set. The card represents a recurring red sorcery mechanic that allows a player to sacrifice a creature to deal damage equal to its power to any target. Its inclusion in Dark Ascension was intended to support the set's graveyard-centric themes, providing players a way to utilize creatures that were otherwise destined to be removed from the battlefield.
The artwork for this specific printing was created by Wayne Reynolds, a long-time contributor to the game known for his dynamic and action-oriented style. Reynolds focused on capturing the visceral intensity of the spell, depicting a character violently launching another creature into the air. The card is viewed by players as a classic utility staple, frequently utilized in aggressive deck archetypes to secure a victory by converting a high-power threat into direct damage against an opponent.
