Floating-Dream Zubera

Floating-Dream Zubera was released in 2004 as part of the Champions of Kamigawa expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set drew heavily from Japanese mythology and folklore, introducing players to the spirit-centric plane of Kamigawa. This card belongs to a cycle of five 'Zubera' creatures, which were designed to reward players for sacrificing multiple members of the group to trigger synergistic, cumulative effects that reflect the hive-mind nature of these spirit entities.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Daren Bader, who leaned into the surreal, ethereal aesthetic that defined the Kamigawa block. Bader sought to capture the otherworldly and somewhat unsettling essence of a spirit that exists between the physical and spectral realms. Upon its release, the card was primarily utilized in niche tribal decks that focused on sacrificing low-cost spirits to overwhelm opponents through incremental card advantage, earning it a modest but enduring reputation among players who enjoy engine-building mechanics.
