Where it came from
Folk Hero was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed to capture the flavor and mechanics of the Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms setting, specifically focusing on the city of Baldur's Gate. The card is a background enchantment, a card type introduced in this set to function as a secondary commander, allowing players to pair it with creatures that feature the 'Choose a Background' mechanic.
The card was illustrated by artist Wisnu Tan. It depicts a heroic figure amidst a community, reflecting the flavor text that emphasizes the transition from a local personality to a figure of legend. Design-wise, it provides a consistent card-draw engine for players utilizing the party mechanic or tribal synergies common in the set, making it a functional and thematic centerpiece for decks centered around heroic or creature-heavy strategies.
