Where it came from
The Folio of Fancies is a rare promotional card from the Magic: The Gathering set Throne of Eldraine, released in October 2019. It was designed as a component of the game's reward structure for local game stores, specifically appearing as a non-foil promotional card distributed through various organized play initiatives. The set itself was heavily influenced by Arthurian legend and Grimm's fairy tales, intended to evoke a high-fantasy, storybook aesthetic that marked a distinct departure from the game's previous settings.
The artwork for this specific card was crafted by illustrator Bram Sels, who sought to capture the whimsical yet slightly unsettling nature of the Eldraine plane. The design focuses on the concept of a magical book that consumes resources to generate effects, echoing the set's broader mechanical themes of enchantment and narrative-driven gameplay. Within the collecting community, the card is recognized for its unique 'story-mirror' frame treatment, which separates it from the standard card stock used in booster packs.
