Food Chain was originally printed in the Mercadian Masques expansion, released in 1999 as part of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed during a period when the game designers were experimenting with mechanics that could bypass traditional resource management, the card was intended to reward players for sacrificing creatures to fuel subsequent plays, effectively creating an engine for sustained momentum during a single turn.
