Where it came from
Forbidding Spirit was released in the 2019 Magic: The Gathering set Ravnica Allegiance, a return to the plane of Ravnica that focused on the conflict between the city’s various guilds. As a card affiliated with the Azorius Senate, its mechanics are designed to embody the bureaucratic and taxing nature of the guild, imposing a barrier to combat through a defensive toll mechanic that forces opponents to pay extra mana to attack.
The artwork was created by illustrator Magali Villeneuve, a prominent figure in the Magic: The Gathering community known for her elegant and ethereal character designs. Her interpretation of the Spirit utilizes the distinctive clean, structured aesthetic of the Azorius aesthetic, blending spectral energy with the architectural motifs of the Ravnica cityscape to convey a sense of divine, legalistic authority.
