Provenance

Where it came from

Forcemage Advocate was released in 2002 as part of the Judgment expansion, the third and final set in the Odyssey block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set was noted for its emphasis on graveyard interactions and color-shifted mechanics, reflecting a period where the designers were experimenting heavily with the game's foundational rules regarding resource management and player interaction.

The artwork for the card was provided by illustrator Darrell Riche. In line with the artistic direction of the Odyssey block, which favored a high-fantasy aesthetic often depicting active, dynamic combatants, Riche captured the character in a moment of tactical deployment. The card was designed as part of a cycle of Advocate creatures, which were intended to provide players with balanced, symmetrical utility in multiplayer formats, allowing opponents to pull cards from their graveyards in exchange for a board-state advantage.
