Where it came from
Formless Genesis was released as part of the Edge of Eternities Commander set for Magic: The Gathering, designed to support the expansion's focus on non-linear temporal themes and abstract cosmic entities. The card mechanics emphasize the set's identity of bridging past and future states of play, allowing players to manipulate the battlefield in ways that mirror the set's philosophical narrative of a universe constantly being rewritten.
The visual design of the card leans into the surrealist aesthetic prevalent throughout the Edge of Eternities collection, featuring ethereal, shifting geometry that avoids a defined central figure. This choice reflects the card's title and its intent to represent the raw, unshaped potential of the multiverse. The artwork received attention from the player community for its departure from traditional creature or spell iconography, signaling a thematic shift toward more existential concepts in modern set design.
