Forsaken City

Forsaken City was released in 2001 as part of the Planeshift expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. As the second set in the Invasion block, Planeshift focused on the conflict between the plane of Dominaria and the invading Phyrexians, reflecting a narrative of desolation and environmental decay. The card was designed to mechanically represent the theme of abandonment, requiring players to discard cards to tap the land for mana, a trade-off that highlights the high cost of accessing resources in a blighted landscape.

The atmospheric illustration was created by artist Donato Giancola, whose work is highly regarded in the fantasy genre for its classical composition and painterly depth. Giancola focused on capturing the haunting, ruined architecture of the setting, using muted tones and sweeping shadows to evoke a sense of historical erasure. Upon its release, the card was noted by players for its unconventional utility, serving as a distinct example of the experimental land designs characteristic of the era's game development.
