What it does
Wall creatures you control get +1/+0 and have banding. (Any creatures with banding, and up to one without, can attack in a band. Bands are blocked as a group. If any creatures with banding you control are blocking or being blocked by a creature, you divide that creature's combat damage, not its controller, among any of the creatures it's being blocked by or is blocking.)

Where it came from
Fortified Area was originally released in the 1995 Fourth Edition core set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It served as a reprint of a card originally featured in the 1994 Legends expansion, intended to provide players with land-based utility that could grant creature defensive bonuses during combat. The card reflected the game's early design philosophy, which often explored complex land interactions that have since become less common in standard play.
The card features an illustration by Dameon Willich, who contributed numerous pieces to the game during its formative years. His aesthetic for the piece focused on the high-fantasy architecture typical of the era, aiming to visualize the mechanical concept of a fortified position. While the card is generally viewed as a nostalgic artifact by long-time collectors, its design is often cited in discussions regarding the balance and mechanical limitations of early Magic sets.
