Where it came from
Foundry Hornet was released in 2017 as part of the Aether Revolt set for Magic: The Gathering. Set in the steampunk-inspired plane of Kaladesh, the card reflects the world's focus on invention and aether-powered technology. Within the game's lore, these constructs are often utilized by the Consulate or rogue inventors to maintain security or defend precious technological innovations.
The card features artwork by Chase Stone, who illustrated the mechanical insect with a blend of natural biology and intricate metalwork. The design highlights the set's signature aesthetic, combining organic shapes with the brass and copper accents characteristic of Kaladeshian artifacts. Upon release, the card served as a common-rarity utility piece, primarily valued for its presence in Limited formats like Draft and Sealed, where its evasion and mechanical synergy made it a functional tool for players building around artifact themes.
