Provenance

Where it came from

Frantic Purification was released in 2002 as part of the Torment expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to explore themes of darkness and moral ambiguity, following the narrative arc of the plane of Otaria. The card was crafted to reflect the desperate, chaotic nature of the set's setting, offering players a high-risk, high-reward mechanic that forces a choice between resource stability and board state manipulation.

The artwork for the card was illustrated by Greg Staples, a prolific artist known for his moody, atmospheric contributions to the game during this era. Staples aimed to capture the visceral intensity of the spell's effect, utilizing deep shadows and a muted color palette to convey the frantic, almost maddening urgency of the purification process. Upon release, the card was received as a niche utility piece, valued by players for its unconventional application of damage and life-cycle mechanics.
