Where it came from
Frantic Search originally appeared in the Urza's Legacy expansion in 1999 as an instant that allowed players to draw two cards and discard two, while untapping three lands. Its design was intended to provide card selection and cycle through the deck, though it quickly became infamous in competitive play for enabling powerful combo strategies. Because of its efficiency, the card was eventually restricted or banned in several formats, cementing its reputation as a potent utility piece in Magic: The Gathering history.
The Ultimate Masters version, released in 2018, features updated artwork by illustrator Igor Kieryluk. This printing was part of a special set designed to celebrate the history of the game by showcasing high-impact cards with new, premium visual interpretations. Kieryluk’s aesthetic for this edition leaned into a more modern, visceral style, moving away from the classic Urza-era visual language while maintaining the card's iconic status among enfranchised players who value both mechanical utility and artistic variety.
