Where it came from
Frogmite was released in 2003 as part of the Mirrodin expansion, the first set in a block centered around an artificial, metal-infused plane. Designed by the Magic: The Gathering research and development team, the creature was crafted to anchor the artifact-heavy mechanics of the set, specifically utilizing the affinity for artifacts ability to reward players for filling the battlefield with low-cost components.
The illustration was created by artist Carl Critchlow, whose work captures the grotesque, mechanical essence of the Mirrodin ecosystem. The design was intended to look like a scavenger, reflecting the parasitic nature of the creatures that inhabited the plane's scrap heaps.
