Frontier Mastodon

Frontier Mastodon was originally printed in the Fate Reforged expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released in early 2015. As part of the Khans of Tarkir block, the set was designed to explore a time-shifted version of the game's setting, depicting the world as it existed a millennium before the modern era. The card reflects the prehistoric theme of this era, emphasizing the primal, heavy-hitting nature of the beasts inhabiting the icy tundra of Tarkir.

The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a frequent contributor to the game known for his expressive and atmospheric work. The design focuses on the immense scale of the creature, utilizing the 'Ferocious' mechanic—a keyword introduced in the set to reward players for controlling creatures with power of four or greater—to integrate the mastodon's overwhelming size directly into its gameplay utility. It was later included in 'The List', a curated selection of reprints integrated into later booster packs, ensuring its continued circulation.
