Where it came from
Fumulus, the Infestation was released in 2024 as part of the Foundations Jumpstart set, a product line designed by Wizards of the Coast to serve as an accessible entry point for new Magic: The Gathering players. The card functions as a thematic cornerstone for the black-aligned 'Grave' or 'Infestation' archetypes, which focus on utilizing the graveyard as a resource to generate board presence through tokens and attrition.
The art and design reflect the game's shift toward creating iconic, top-down horror creatures that embody specific mechanical themes. By combining a low mana cost with a graveyard-centric ability, the designers intended for Fumulus to provide early-game stability and late-game scaling. As a component of the Jumpstart ecosystem, the card is intentionally balanced to be intuitive for beginners while remaining relevant in higher-complexity environments.
