Where it came from
Funeral Room // Awakening Hall was released as part of the Duskmourn: House of Horror set in 2024, specifically appearing as a promotional variant. The card captures the thematic essence of the set, which draws heavy inspiration from 1980s horror tropes and the concept of an infinite, ever-changing haunted mansion. Wizards of the Coast designed this double-faced enchantment to represent the visceral, claustrophobic atmosphere of the house, blending mechanical utility with the grim aesthetic characteristic of the plane.
The art and design for this card were crafted to evoke a sense of dread and transition, utilizing the dark, neon-soaked palette prevalent throughout the Duskmourn expansion. The illustration emphasizes the unsettling architecture of the house, intended to ground players in the terrifying environment of the setting. Upon its release, the card was received as a key component of the set’s mechanical identity, praised by players for its flavor and the way it utilizes the double-faced card format to tell a miniature story of transformation and discovery within the game.
