Where it came from
Funeral Room // Awakening Hall was released in 2024 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Duskmourn: House of Horror. This double-faced enchantment card reflects the set's thematic commitment to 1980s-inspired horror tropes, centering on a sprawling, haunted mansion that acts as a sentient entity. The card design highlights the contrast between the macabre setting of the funeral rites and the supernatural resurgence occurring within the home's architecture.
The art and mechanical design for this card were developed by the Wizards of the Coast creative team to evoke a sense of dread and transformation. By utilizing the double-faced mechanic, the design allows players to transition from a static, mournful environment into a more dynamic and aggressive state. It serves as a stylistic nod to the claustrophobic atmosphere of classic slasher cinema, designed to immerse players in the specific aesthetic of a plane consumed by an endless, nightmarish building.
