Where it came from
Gadwick, the Wizened was released as part of the Throne of Eldraine set in 2019, drawing heavy inspiration from European folklore and the Arthurian legends that define the plane of Eldraine. This specific version, identified as collector number 48p, was issued as a promotional card featuring unique borderless extended-art treatment, which was intended to showcase the card's illustration more prominently than the standard set release.
The character design reflects a classic high-fantasy archetype, rendered by illustrator Johannes Voss. His artistic approach emphasizes the wisdom and age associated with the card's abilities, utilizing deep blues and intricate magical motifs to ground the character within the set's fairy-tale aesthetic. The card was well-received by players for its balance of thematic flavor and its utility in blue-aligned control decks within the game's competitive landscape.
