Where it came from
Gale's Redirection was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion. This set was designed to integrate the rich lore and mechanics of Dungeons & Dragons into the Magic: The Gathering card game, focusing specifically on the iconic characters and locations of the Forgotten Realms. The card depicts Gale of Waterdeep, a prominent wizard companion from the video game Baldur's Gate 3, reflecting his role as a powerful practitioner of the arcane arts who struggles with the consequences of his ambition.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game known for his expressive, painterly style. In designing the visual representation of Gale, Voss aimed to capture the character's intellectual depth and his tether to magical instability. The artwork was well-received by fans for its faithfulness to the character's in-game design, effectively translating his scholarly yet tormented appearance onto the card format.
