Where it came from
Gatstaf Shepherd, later transformed into Gatstaf Howler, was introduced in the 2011 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Innistrad. The set was designed around a gothic horror theme, drawing heavy inspiration from classic monster tropes, including werewolves, vampires, and spirits. This card utilizes the double-faced card mechanic, a technical innovation introduced in this set to mechanically represent the transformation of humans into werewolves under the light of the full moon.
The card was illustrated by Greg Staples, whose artistic style often leans into the dark, gritty aesthetic favored for the horror-themed setting. The visual narrative captures the transformation process, shifting from a protective shepherd guarding his flock to a feral, predatory beast. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its flavorful integration of creature lore into game mechanics, serving as a staple representation of the werewolf creature type during the Innistrad block.
