Genju of the Fens

Genju of the Fens was originally introduced in the Betrayers of Kamigawa expansion in 2005 as part of a cycle of legendary enchantments. Designed by the Magic: The Gathering research and development team, these cards were intended to represent the spirits of the land manifesting in physical form, adhering to the set’s deep thematic ties to Japanese folklore and the Shinto belief in kami residing in inanimate objects. The design allowed players to enchant lands, which could then be animated into creatures by paying mana, offering a unique blend of land utility and threat deployment.

The version from Duel Decks: Garruk vs. Liliana, released in 2008, features the original illustration by Dan Dos Santos. As a product designed to introduce players to the iconic rivalry between the planeswalkers Garruk Wildspeaker and Liliana Vess, the deck included this card to bolster the black-aligned deck’s defensive capabilities. The artwork emphasizes the swampy, ethereal nature of the creature, a hallmark of the Kamigawa block’s art direction, which sought to convey a sense of ancient, untamed power through vivid colors and ghostly aesthetics.
