Genju of the Fields

Genju of the Fields was released in 2005 as part of the Betrayers of Kamigawa expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was the second installment in the Kamigawa block, which drew heavy inspiration from Japanese mythology and folklore. This enchantment cycle was designed to represent the living spirits of the land, featuring a unique mechanic that allowed players to temporarily animate their basic lands into creatures, reflecting the thematic emphasis on the bond between the mortal realm and the spirit world.

The artwork for this specific card was illustrated by Japanese artist Ittoku, who contributed several pieces to the Kamigawa block. The design aesthetic sought to capture the ethereal and fluid nature of a spirit guardian, using soft, luminous brushwork that contrasted with the more rigid card frame. Upon its release, the Genju cycle was noted for its utility in Limited formats, providing players with a recurring threat that was difficult for opponents to remove permanently without specialized enchantment destruction.
